Below is a blog post from when our very own employee got to meet one of our sponsored children.

Wow, we did it! We made it from Saskatoon to Miches, Dominican Republic and back again. Safely! What a wonderful journey it was, and what an opportunity it is to be able to visit a sponsor child. Modular’s Restoring Hope is very proud, and thankful to be fortunate enough to not only sponsor over 30 children around the world, but to visit one of those children is above and beyond.

We started with a 3:00am wake up call to catch our flight. We were assuming with all the things we were going to bring to donate that we would be over weight. However, as luck would have it, we came just below our limit for all our baggage, especially our MOD3! We then were assuming that customs or the TSA would have their eyes set on our 3-cubic-foot MOD3, and it would be all rummaged through when we opened it up once we arrived. Again our assumptions were wrong! We arrived unscaved into Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

A few days later, the night before we left Puerto Plata for our visit, we were prepping for our excursion to Santo Domingo where we would have to spend two nights in order to visit our sponsor in Miches. We found one of the bags we had brought for donations had been stolen. At first we were upset, but we soon came to the realization that no one would steal a bag full of school supplies, and toys unless they truly felt they needed it.

4.5 hours of driving later we were in Santo Domingo, and the following day we were expecting the same driving time or more due to poor road conditions. Suiting to our previous assumptions we were once again wrong. We arrived in Miches early, with only about 3.5 hours of driving. The only trouble was that one of us had food poisoning, which probably made that 3.5 hours seem a little longer.

We then arrived in Miches, and spent a wonderful day with one of Restoring Hope’s sponsor children, Marelin. She had also brought her mother, and her little sister. Both of which were great additions to the day, making the mood more comfortable for everyone. We saw some of World Vision’s great efforts to establish a positive community, along with how beautiful the Miches area is; having lunch at humble Dominican restaurant on the beach. Their smiles were extremely contagious, and it was a remarkably rewarding experience we will never forget!

All in all the visit when perfectly! We look forward to do doing another one in the near future! Please watch the video above to see a short summary of our visit.
